Be wary of the pork you buy in the City as there is a unhealthy nexus through which stray pigs are being sold to dealers who supply meat to shops. | |
| Although not much is known about how the network works, its existence is common knowledge among residents of HSR Layout. The area is not just grappling with garbage and dog menace, but also stray pigs are found in large numbers at all rubbish dumping areas. Residents say they are tired of complaining to the Palike about the menace and have now given up. “There are many pigs on 25th ‘A’ Main and a local goon has a thriving business of selling these animals to meat dealers. We have seen live pigs being weighed and transported in trucks here,” said a resident of HSR Layout. Recently, the Palike had brought workers from outside Bangalore to catch these pigs and relocate them, but the local goons obstructed their work. A Palike official said that the civic agency was aware of the problem, but a man was preventing them from shifting the pigs. Zero investment “We have learnt about the profit he is making with zero investment. He has similar businesses in Singasandra, Mangammannapalya, Kaikondanahalli and surrounding areas,” the official said. The Palike has devised a plan to deal with the problem, which is rampant in the newly added BBMP areas, and tenders will be called for its execution in the coming months. Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry department of the Palike, Dr Parvez Ahmed Piran said: “One has to obtain a licence from the BBMP for selling and rearing pigs. Stringent action will be taken against those illegally selling these animals.” Garbage menace Residents of HSR Layout complain that the junction between 24th and 27th Main is a mess as the Palike is using the KPTCL substation as a garbage collection point. “We have tried to get the Palike and the public to work together to clean up the area but nothing seems to have helped so far,” said Brigadier Murthy, a resident of Sector 2, HSR Layout. However, Palike’s environmental officer, Krishna Murthy promised that garbage management would be streamlined in the area next month. “I am aware of the problem but we need a collection point for transporting garbage. Despite cleaning the area with bleaching powder, the place stinks. As per the new tender issued to the contractors, garbage will be collected from individual houses only if it is segregated as wet and dry at the source,” he added. | |
